Forbort, Nelson, Grimaldi Make Preliminary Roster

UND defenseman Derek Forbort, forward Brock Nelson and recruit Rocco Grimaldi have all made the preliminary roster for the U.S. World Junior team. The roster was announced Tuesday morning.

Forbort, Nelson and Grimaldi will report to the camp on Dec. 16 in upstate New York. They will participate in a couple of exhibition games and the final roster will be announced on Dec. 22 or 23. Three defensemen and four forwards will be cut.

“(Forbort) is a big player, a rangy player, who has really blossomed in the last year,” USA Hockey’s Jim Johannson said. “Looking forward to having him.”

Grimaldi is the youngest player on the roster (the only 1993-born player).

“Rocco has been dominant playing against college hockey, junior hockey and international hockey,” Johannson said. “You’re going to see a 5-5 kid out here who is dynamite energy and has created offense at every level he’s played.”

Forbort, Nelson and Grimaldi will definitely miss the UND vs. U.S. Under-18 exhibition game. If they make the squad, Forbort and Nelson also will miss the Hall of Fame Game against Minnesota-Duluth (as will Bulldog defenseman Justin Faulk if he makes the team). They should return a day before the series against Robert Morris.

That is interesting how Forbort has yet and looks to not be able to play his hometown team this year. When they came to The Ralph he was out sick.
