UND senior forward Brad Malone has signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche and will report to Lake Erie to play in the AHL playoffs. Lake Erie takes on Manitoba in the first round, so Malone will be playing up in Winnipeg soon as a pro.
Malone was a fourth-round pick of the Avs in 2007. His cousin, Ryan, plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The New Brunswick native had a fantastic senior year, tallying a career-high 40 points in 43 games. He finished with 85 career points, made two trips to the Frozen Four, won two MacNaughton Cups and two Broadmoor Trophies.
Malone said he’s excited to start his pro career, but will miss UND.
“I came in as a little boy and I’m leaving as a more mature and wise kid,” Malone said. “This place definitely changed my life drastically. This is the best place in the world. I don’t think anyone fully realizes how great it is until it gets taken out from under you. Obviously, everyone knows we wanted to win it this year. But besides the wins and losses, everything here was first class and I don’t think words can ever describe what it did for me.”
