LaPoint Signs With Reading In ECHL

Former Sioux defenseman Derrick LaPoint has signed his first pro hockey contract.

LaPoint inked with the Reading Royals, the ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

LaPoint, an Eau Claire, Wis., product, was drafted by the Florida Panthers but became a free agent on Aug. 15 after not signing with the organization.

During 149 career games, LaPoint tallied seven goals and 37 assists. He came to UND with a reputation for putting up big offensive numbers, but turned into one of UND’s best defensive players and a penalty kill specialist.

The only senior from last year’s team who has yet to sign a contract is forward Evan Trupp.

Moving on from last year’s team

Matt Frattin — Toronto Maple Leafs
Chay Genoway — Minnesota Wild
Brad Malone — Colorado Avalanche
Jason Gregoire — Winnipeg Jets
Brett Hextall — Phoenix Coyotes
Jake Marto — St. John’s IceCaps (AHL)
Derrick LaPoint — Reading Royals (ECHL)
Brent Davidson — Boras HC (Sweden)
Evan Trupp –TBA

I would have asked this question in an earlier post but there were too many comments. What are the advantages/disadvantages of Notre Dame remaining independent (besides the “all Irish channel”)?

  2. Wow

Another list of players since 03 you shake your head when looking at the rafters and say, how the hell isn’t their at least 2 to 3 more banners up! Not complaing but just saying what many probably think! Go Sioux

As a fan I am shocked nobody has signed Trupp yet. I have watched him rip one from the point, dangle through a maze of players, score an all most impossible goal(s) make a impossible pass, back check as hard as anybody then amaze me with his talent and witt. Luckily for us Sioux fans the coaches were able to find him b4 another team did. If he goes pro or not he will be one of the most entertaining players I will remember for a long time.
