UND Lands Shane Gersich

UND’s big week in recruiting continued Thursday night as Holy Family forward Shane Gersich, believed to be the top available forward in Minnesota, tweeted that he has committed to UND.

Gersich currently is a sophomore in high school. He is the nephew of former Roseau greats Neal, Aaron and Paul Broten, all of whom went to Minnesota.

This comes on the heels of UND landing St. Cloud Cathedral forward Austin Poganski.

Knowing that there is a real possibility the C-word is involved with the guy, I will believe it when he gets here.

Brad, do you forsee either of these guys playing for NTDP, or are they probably going to stick to high school? Also, you mention both these guys are among the tops in MN, will that necessarily mean high (if at all) draft choices?

    1. He turned down an offer to play with the NTDP last season. I would guess if he moves on from Holy Family next year, it will be to Omaha in the USHL, where he was the No. 1 overall pick. As for NHL draft choices, it’s probably too early to try to project that.

BIG, BIG get for the Sioux. I hope he stays in high school for one more year. One can never get back what is lost from one season of MN high school hockey.

Welcome Shane – great tradition, great coaches, great school. You might want to screen your call to avoid angry Gopher boosters.
