Zajac Signs $46 Million Deal With Devils

The Devils need a new captain and may be ready to look toward a UND player again.

Travis Zajac signed an eight-year, $46 million deal with the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, becoming the first player to sign a longterm contract under the NHL’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

New Jersey lost captain Zach Parise to the Minnesota Wild during free agency over the summer. Parise captained the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals last season.

The Devils have not yet named a captain to replace Parise.

With Zajac’s new contract, the top-six paid UND players in the NHL now have contracts that total about $227 million.

UND’s top active NHL contracts

$98 million — Zach Parise, Wild, 13 years
