Weekly Wednesday Update

All the hype and the talk about the rivalry is in the past, but this weekend’s series against St. Cloud State will be just as critical for UND as last week’s showdown against Minnesota.

In fact, St. Cloud State is tied with the Gophers for first place in the WCHA (with the same number of games played). UND is two points back.

After last Saturday’s game against Minnesota, UND coach Dave Hakstol said he didn’t think his team would have any trouble re-focusing after the emotional Gopher series, and the Huskies certainly should have UND’s attention.

In fact, one UND player may be more excited for this series than the last one.

Junior forward Mitch MacMillan will be going against his old team. Read here to see what MacMillan is saying about that matchup.

Also of note, Hakstol said that defenseman Joe Gleason will be available for this weekend’s series after apparently getting nicked Saturday night against the Gophers.

That means the staff will once again have some difficult lineup decisions.

This week’s Q&A is with Colten St. Clair, who re-entered the lineup Saturday and played a very strong game. St. Clair gave UND energy throughout the game and Hakstol says the Arizona product needs to keep playing like that to be effective.

On the women’s side, there will be a feature on WCHA defensive player of the week Shelby Amsley-Benzie. Last weekend, Amsley-Benzie allowed just two goals in two games against Wisconsin. Look for her to get the start Friday night at St. Cloud.

The Greatest Sioux Jersey Ever tournament has reached the finals. It appears people like the black jerseys as two of them are in the final. Which is the greatest Sioux jersey? Cast your vote here.

My personal favorite would have been the 2010-12 white jersey.

Brad Malone was called up to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday after it was announced that Avs forward Steve Downie tore his ACL and is out for the year.

Malone’s old linemate and good friend, Matt Frattin, also may be getting the call after Joffrey Lupul went down for the Leafs.

We had a live chat this afternoon. If you want to re-read that, it’s below.

Brad, from what I saw on the weekend both goalies gave up four goals, made some good saves and had one or two goals they would like back. UND played much better on Saturday. Has Saunders’ play of late wiped out his good performance for most of the season? Gothberg 3.36 GAA and .881 SP over his last two starts, Saunders at 3.50 and .869.

For the entire year, including exhibition games:

    Gothberg 3.39 and .882; Saunders 2.36 and .917

Maybe need to hold off on Malone, word on the street in the small hours of the morning is that Ryan O’Reilly has been released from his KHL contract. The details are sketch, although it appears he may have aggravated a foot injury so even if he signs back with the avs, he might not hit the active roster right away.

That being said, when Kobasew went down with an injury last December and Malone played in the show for 8 games, the Avs did pretty well against some pretty good clubs, and most of the time he was on the ice, Pony didn’t look like the game was ahead of him. As an Avs fan, I have my fingers crossed Kobasew hits the waiver wire.

Wow, I was not aware Frattin was not playing for the Leafs. When was he sent down? I thought he had a great year last year….but can’t say I have followed him that closely…??
