Gameday final: UND 1, Wisconsin 1, tie

TONIGHT’S VIEWING: Tonight’s game is NOT on DirecTV (Saturday’s game is on DirecTV 626). The game IS on Fox College Sports Central and Midco Sports Network. If you need a webcast, it’s available at undsports.com. Lineup notes: Wisconsin isn’t releasing its line chart until game time tonight, UND is responding by doing the same. The lines below are what I’m expecting them to be.

First period

No scoring.

Second period

UND 1, Wisconsin 0 — Danny Kristo (Dillon Simpson, Joe Gleason) :25 (pp). Kristo blasts a shot from the point through a Parks screen. The puck barely squeezes five-hole and trickles across the line.

UND 1, Wisconsin 1 — Michael Mersch (Mark Zengerle, Joseph LaBate) :38. UND’s lead only lasts :13 as Mersch takes the puck from behind the net and attempts a wraparound. Gothberg gets his first attempt, but Mersch scores on his second whack at it.

Third period

Scoreless.

  1. Brad, I know in the last few weeks a lot of fans have gotten down on our D… and your response was that –look how few shots they limited St. Cloud too last Saturday– well, I think our frustration comes from the poor passes they have made, and the turn overs. They seem to do a good job covering their man once they are in our end, but I think we all would like to see them step up and maybe stop them from coming into our end so easily. I expect big things out of Forbort as he is highly drafted, but he has made so many poor decisions with the puck as of late it is frustrating. I also think the penalties called on Mac for his big, clean hits, has left him a little shell shock, so he is holding back. Love to watch him play, but part of his game is the big hit. Fun to watch these guys, but miss the D core of a couple years ago.

    • No kidding. That embellishment by Grimaldi on the holding call on Schulze in overtime was comical. That is the sort of acting that needs to get called.

  2. This team just needs to start getting more pucks to the net. Way too much of trying to make some fancy play. That powerplay in ot was absolutely terrible. 9 games left and I say they need to win a minimum of 6 to even have a shot at the conference title or even home ice. Not to mention pairwise. After a great start, its been quite the let down after holy cross.

  3. Too come out of it with a tie was almost like a win with those two horribly timed penalties. I am not so sure that Drake’s penalty should have been a major but I can understand that in real time, it looked worse than it was. I would think about sitting MitchMac for that penalty in OT. You could see he was trying to console himself in the box cause he knew it was stupid. Kober even said on TV last night that they need to play on the edge of a cliff but not keep going over it.

  4. It does appear they are regressing. Finish strong though in the last 9 games and all of this is forgotten. I have a feeling it will be nail biting again when it comes to the NCAA picks. I think this team will be on that bubble so to speak.

  5. why would any sioux fan even want them to make the NCAA tournament, they’ll just end up being a big embarrassment, this team blows!!!

  6. Maybe we should all remember Duluth two years ago. I don’t recall the exact details, but even later in the season than now, they had a bad stretch. They ended up fourth in the WCHA. Fans were calling for Sandelin to be fired. I’m not even sure they made it to St. Paul, if they did it was one and done. But they made it into the NC$$ tourney, strung four together, and raised a national championship banner. All you have to do it get in, even if it is ugly and by the skin of your teeth. Anything can, will, and does happen in that tournament. Go SIOUX!
