  1. What happened in the women’s pairwise that dropped UND two spots after they swept this weekend? I’d really like to see them make the tournament this year.

    • Wisco swept UMD, which greatly devalued UND’s wins against the Bulldogs earlier in the year. UND’s TUC record is abysmal now that UMD has fallen off. The PWR are great if you play consistently well all year, but when you’re like UND teams of late — struggle early and in nonconference games — it comes back to bit you even if you are surging at the toward the end of the year. Still games to play and a lot could change. Go UND!

  2. I normally agree with the USCHO polls and the PWR system….for the most part. However, I am very confused by the rankings in this last poll. First of all, I hope UND deserves to be #6 in the PWR’s but I’m not so sure (need to prove it in the next 4 games). But, putting UND aside, tell me how SCS is ranked #9 (should be #4 or #5 at the lowest)? Denver is very mediocre this year but still get a #11 ranking? Then, MSU-Mankato is ranked #7…..am I missing something here? I have not watched any of the eastern teams so I have no comment with their rankings. I see two polls (USA Today & USCHO) have Notre Dame at #11 and this seems about right. The PWR’s has Notre Dame at 15 which makes little sense. N. Dame has a very strong team and plays much like UND with their physical play. I am quite certain we will see N. Dame make it deep this year. Brad, you have any comments with the most recent rankings?

    • The pairwise rankings are not about “deserving” and certain teams being favored, it is based on statistics and comparisons against other teams so there can not be any bias because of personal opinion or school tradition in the rankings.

  3. Suture,

It all comes down to consistency, non-conference record, and your play against teams that are TUCs (teams under consideration). St Clown has a horrible non-conference record, thus, they lose huge comparison points against teams from other conferences, even if they haven’t played a majority of those teams. I believe they were swept by Northern Michigan, which is in the bottom half of the CCHA, thus they lose huge comparison points to the rest of the teams in the CCHA. Read Dave Bargers Pairwise analysis’ or ask him directly on SIOUXsports.com. He is the man.

  4. My bad. Jim Dahl does the pairwise stuff. And on top of it I misspelled Dave’s last name (Berger). Holy!

    Both are the man though!

  5. Thanks Beaz, I appreciate your input. I do know that the PWR’s are calculated but I am just a little surprised at DU’s position, MSU-MKTO’s position and how low SCS is. At the end of the day it really does not matter that much. You either win and move on…..or you lose and stay home.
