Attendance in the WCHA 2012-13

It was another very strong season in WCHA attendance. WCHA teams held down the top five positions nationally in attendance (1. UND, 2. Minnesota, 3. Wisconsin, 4. Omaha, 5. Colorado College) and had six of the top seven.

Here’s how the WCHA stacked up (national rank in parenthesis):

1. North Dakota 11,592 (1)
2. Minnesota 9,950 (2)
3. Wisconsin 9,521 (3)
4. Neb. Omaha 7,233 (4)
5. Colorado College 6,979 (5)
6. Minn. Duluth 6,206 (7)
7. Denver 5,269 (11)
8. St. Cloud State 4,413 (15)
9. Minnesota State 3,655 (21)
10. Bemidji State 3,225 (25)
11. Michigan Tech 3,079 (28)
12. Alaska Anchorage 2,729 (33)

One thing you will notice is that the top eight teams in the WCHA in attendance are the ones leaving. The bottom four are the ones staying. Same with the CCHA.

CCHA attendance (national rank in parenthesis)

1. Michigan State 5,869 (8)
2. Michigan 5,357 (10)
3. Notre Dame 4,885 (13)
4. Ohio State 4,004 (19)
5. Western Michigan 3,633 (22)
6. Miami 3,004 (29)
7. Northern Michigan 2,845 (30)
8. Alaska Fairbanks 2,820 (31)
9. Bowling Green 2,518 (34)
10. Ferris State 2,128 (40)
11. Lake Superior 2,044 (42)

If you want to look at what the new WCHA will be, and who may be the largest drawing teams, this is how they look this year:

1. Minnesota State 3,655
2. Bemidji State 3,225
3. Michigan Tech 3,079
4. Northern Michigan 2,845
5. Alaska Fairbanks 2,820
6. Alaska Anchorage 2,729
7. Bowling Green 2,518
8. Ferris State 2,128
9. Lake Superior 2,044
10. Alabama Huntsville 1,983

And if you want to look at WCHA attendance in comparison with last year, that’s always interesting. No surprise that MSU-Mankato pulled off the largest percentage increase with its resurgent season. One surprise is how St. Cloud State’s attendance fell in a year where it won its first league title.

Could it be because of the renovations there? Could it be that they didn’t report real accurately in years past? Either way, it’s interesting to look at:

Minnesota State……………. +13.2 percent
Michigan Tech…………………+6.2 percent
Minnesota……………………….+4.3 percent
Colorado College……………..+3.3 percent
North Dakota……………………+2.2 percent
Denver…………………………….-1.7 percent
Minnesota Duluth………………-2.0 percent
Nebraska Omaha………………-8.1 percent
Bemidji State…………………….-8.5 percent
St. Cloud State…………………-10.7 percent
Alaska Anchorage……………..-11.8 percent
Wisconsin………………………..-19.2 percent
