Minnesota’s Schmidt turns pro

The first early signing for the Big 10 is Minnesota defenseman Nate Schmidt, who signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

Schmidt is an offensive defenseman who tallied 32 points in 40 games this season, while earning first-team all-WCHA honors.

Schmidt will have the first year of his contract burned this year.

Minnesota also will be watching Zach Budish (Nashville), Nick Bjugstad (Florida) and Erik Haula (Minnesota) to see if they sign early.

  1. Here anything about any of our players yet? Also have any insight on any seniors signing or if they’ll hold out and go the free agent route?

    • Sounds like Kristo is taking off soon to Montreal’s AHL affiliate. Check out Goon’s World for updates on that as I am not positive quite yet

  2. Brad, do you possibly forsee Kyle Raiu also signing? I know players like he, Grimaldi, and Gaudreau face size issues, but do you think that’d really hold them back from leaving?

  3. Didn’t budish announce he was staying during the post game interview?

  4. I think Budish is already gone and just hasn’t been announced yet.

Tweet from Haula: @EHaula: Congrats to two of the bigger beauties I know @Burdish24 @nateschmidt29 #roomies #goodluck

    • It appears as if he took down that post, but it certainly sounds like he will be leaving.

        • Yes, Budish is gone. Two-year deal with the Preds. The official announcement will come today.
