Mayfield Leaves Denver

Denver sophomore defenseman Scott Mayfield has signed a three-year contract with the New York Islanders, giving up his final two years of college eligibility.

The move was expected even before DU fired coach George Gwozdecky, but the change of coaches may have solidified it. Mayfield has been critical of Gwozdecky’s ousting on Twitter.

Mayfield, one of the best two-way defensemen in the league, had four goals and 17 points in 39 games for the Pioneers.

The Los Angeles Kings also have expressed interest in signing DU forward Nick Shore.

    1. I’ve been waiting for a second source to confirm it. Everyone is basing their reports on one tweet right now. I’m guessing it’s true because Alt hasn’t come out and denied it yet, but I’d still like a second source.
