Report: Matteau Bails On Team

According to multiple reports in Canada, one-time UND recruit Stefan Matteau may have quit on his team during the semifinals of the QMJHL playoffs.

Matteau was benched during the third period of Game 2 of his team’s QMJHL series at Baie-Comeau for taking a bad penalty. He apparently was not happy about this and did not accompany the team on the bus back home after the game.

It has been reported that Matteau went on a bus with Blainville-Boisbriand fans instead.

It is unclear if he quit the team, but reports are speculating that he has. Blainville-Boisbriand is expected to have a press conference today to address the situation. Adding to the drama, Matteau’s father is an assistant coach on the team.

Matteau, a first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, was supposed to be a freshman at UND this season. Though he repeatedly assured the coaching staff that he would suit up for UND, he ended up jumping ship for the QMJHL.

Matteau played a few games for the Devils this season, but was eventually returned to his junior team.

I think that a commentor said it very well in the link

This kid sounds like a real treat. Heck, his father is the assistand coach of the team and he pulls this? Just makes you wonder how he would have treated UND. Looking back I guess it was a blessing that he bailed on his commitment.

Stefan Matteau’s dad is an assistant coach on his QJMHL team?
    That is a bit interesting..
Was his dad a coach there BEFORE he committed to the Sioux?
If so they why did we ever think we would get him?
Did his dad become a coach there AFTER he committed to the Sioux?
IE they brought his dad in as a bribe to get an NHL first rounder to bail on a US college and come there? That could be another scoop/lawsuit story huh?

Matteau’s father was the coach before he decommitted from UND. Matteau told the UND coaches in December 2011 that he was firmly committed. Shortly after, Matteau received a lengthy suspension from the USHL. In early January 2012, Matteau’s QMJHL rights were traded to the team his dad is an assistant coach for (Blainville-Boisbriand). Still under suspension, Matteau decided to bail on NTDP and UND and make the jump to the QMJHL.
