According to multiple reports in Canada, one-time UND recruit Stefan Matteau may have quit on his team during the semifinals of the QMJHL playoffs.
Matteau was benched during the third period of Game 2 of his team’s QMJHL series at Baie-Comeau for taking a bad penalty. He apparently was not happy about this and did not accompany the team on the bus back home after the game.
It has been reported that Matteau went on a bus with Blainville-Boisbriand fans instead.
It is unclear if he quit the team, but reports are speculating that he has. Blainville-Boisbriand is expected to have a press conference today to address the situation. Adding to the drama, Matteau’s father is an assistant coach on the team.
Matteau, a first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, was supposed to be a freshman at UND this season. Though he repeatedly assured the coaching staff that he would suit up for UND, he ended up jumping ship for the QMJHL.
Matteau played a few games for the Devils this season, but was eventually returned to his junior team.
