Team USA pulled off a big win Thursday morning against a traditional top team.
The Americans’ bid for a fifth straight gold medal at the IIHF World Under-18 tournament is still alive after a 4-0 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals of the event.
Will Butcher, Tyler Motte, Mike McCarron and J.T. Compher scored goals while Thatcher Demko stopped all 28 Swedish shots for the Americans, who will take on either Russia or Germany in the semifinals.
The U.S. lost to Russia in a thriller earlier in the tournament.
The two local players on Team USA – defensemen Keaton Thompson and Gage Ausmus — both registered a plus-1 rating against the Swedes. Ausmus played 23:34. Thompson played 13:44.
