SCSU’s Jensen signs with Wings

St. Cloud State junior defenseman Nick Jensen has signed with the Detroit Red Wings, giving up his final year of college eligibility.

Jensen won the WCHA’s defensive player of the year award and could have won the league’s player of the year award. While Drew LeBlanc had a great season and won Hobey for the Huskies, Jensen was probably their best player, controlling games from the back end.

Jensen racked up 31 points in 44 games from the blue line and had 86 points in three years.

He is the first player to turn pro early from St. Cloud State and the eighth NCHC player to sign early.

  1. Any word if he will be joining the team right away? The red wings could use some help on their D-line

    • The Red Wings are assigning him to the Grand Rapids Griffens. He will not be with the Wings this year and not likey next year. The Wings have a number of very good young defensemen, including Brendan Smith (Wisconsin) and Danny DeKeyser (Western Michigan)

    • Jensen also delayed his signing in part to take finals (he’s a finance major) so that he wouldn’t waste the past five months of studying.

  2. I realize NHL playoff rosters are set… but DeKeyser is now out with broken hand/wrist. What is the rule on injured players? Are they able to add to roster for next round? Or is Detroit SOL?
