Fenton to be named NCHC commish

Multiple sources have confirmed that the NCHC’s next commissiner will be Miami associate athletic director Josh Fenton.

Fenton will replace Jim Scherr, who left to take a job with the European Games. An announcement is expected this week.

Fenton is the associate athletic director for business and finance at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He does have a hockey background. He has served as a volunteer assistant coach for the RedHawks and the director of hockey operations. He also spent one year as the video coordinator for the San Jose Sharks.

Fenton was a finalist the first time this job was open two years ago. It went to Scherr.

The transition should be a smooth one. Fenton is a current member of the NCAA rules committee and the NCHC council, so he has been involved with the league.

The NCHC will begin its inaugural season this fall with eight members – UND, St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth, Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Western Michigan and Nebraska Omaha.

  1. I see that you state the NCHC will begin its inaugural season with 8 members. I have assumed the league would try to add a couple of new members at some point to make the year-end tournament more financially compelling (just like the WCHA Final Five). Any idea if there are new members to be had?
