Gameday final: UND 4, U.S. Under-18 1

Note: Drake Caggiula was injured early in the second period, trying to hurdle a fallen USA player. Caggiula went airborne and landed on his shoulder/head. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher and went to the hospital in an ambulance. UND CONFIRMS THAT CAGGIULA HAS MOVEMENT AND FEELING IN ALL EXTREMITIES. He will undergo more tests.

UND is home for an exhibition game tonight, dressing two extras. U18 forward Shane Gersich is a UND recruit. Full lines and live chat are below.

First period

No scoring.

Second period

UND 1, USA 0 — Mitch MacMillan (Colten St. Clair, Troy Stecher) 6:04. MacMillan slaps a puck from the corner, near the end line, and it gets past Minney. Bad-angle shot and goal.

UND 2, USA 0 — Brendan O’Donnell (Mark MacMillan, Rocco Grimaldi) 7:59. Grimaldi rims it around the end wall, Mark picks it up and finds O’Donnell cutting down the slot. O’Donnell one-times it for the goal.

UND 3, USA 0 — Jordan Schmaltz (Brendan O’Donnell, Mark MacMillan) 19:57. Parks starts a three-on-two rush up the right wing and hits O’Donnell coming up the center. O’Donnell sets it to the left side to MacMillan, whose attempt winds up in the crease and Schmaltz knocks it in.

Third period

UND 3, USA 1 — Sonny Milano (Alex Tuch, Jack Eichel) 10:46. Just as a power play expires, Tuch makes a great pass to Milano on the back door. Milano fans on his first attempt, but follows up and hits it from near the goalie line. It goes off of Saunders and barely trickles across the line before UND can pull it out.

UND 4, USA 1 — Coltyn Sanderson (Mitch MacMillan) 19:59 (en). Sanderson scores into an empty net just before the buzzer.

  1. Any chance Hrynkiw gets to show off his new pads in net tonight? Curious to see what this guy can do. With the signing of Johnson and ol’ Clarke moving on after this year (Gothberg not relinquishing the net I’m betting) it sounds like he might not see any game time… ever! I’ve read up on him and he sounds like a solid dude, hope he gets his chance somewhere if not here

Then again, is Johnson coming in next fall? Or is Hrynkiw #2 next year
