Chad Johnson found dead in Fargo

Very sad news out of Fargo today: Former UND forward Chad Johnson was found dead in Fargo last night.

Johnson played for UND from 1990-93, scoring six goals and tallying 22 points. He later went on to coach the Lincoln Stars in the USHL. He resigned in Lincoln before the start of this season.

Johnson is the brother of former UND player Steve Johnson, the uncle of current UND freshmen Luke Johnson and Paul LaDue and a former teammate of Dave Hakstol and Dane Jackson.

Hakstol released a statement Tuesday afternoon.

“The UND hockey family has lost a great member. Chad had such a positive impact on everyone who knew him, including myself, his UND teammates, and the hundreds of kids who loved playing for him. We are all better for knowing him and we will miss his quick wit and genuine friendship. We will have Chad and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

“Hard to put into words how much Chad meant to us,” the Stars posted on Twitter. “He was such an awesome friend that he would do anything for you.”

  1. RIP in Chad. I know the battles were overwhelming at times. We all thought the world of you, enjoyed your smile, and laughed when you laughed. We’ll think of you often and we’ll speak of you with nothing but positives.
    God bless the Johnson’s.

  2. Very sad news indeed. Let’s hope that Chad and Marty Schriner (who was a teammate and is also deceased) get together in the after-life and play a little shinny hockey. I feel for the Johnsons. This has to be tough. RIP Chad.
