U.S. Falls To Russia

For just the second time in the last five years, the U.S. won’t earn a medal at the World Junior Championship.

The Americans, who have won gold in two of the past four events, were bounced by Russia 5-3 in the quarterfinals today.

The U.S. led 3-2 after one period on goals by Stefan Matteau, Ryan Hartman and Nic Kerdiles, but the Russians scored back-to-back, five-on-three power-play goals in the second period to take a 4-3 lead. They eventually tacked on an empty-net goal.

Team USA won the gold last year in Ufa, Russia, with UND’s Rocco Grimaldi scoring two goals in the final against Sweden.
