Gameday Final: UND 5, UW 2

TONIGHT’S VIEWING: ESPNU, ESPN3. Lineup notes: UND makes one switch, going with Andrew Panzarella for Mitch MacMillan. Otherwise, no surprises. Full lines and live chat (will show up soon) are below.

First period

UND 1, Wisconsin 0 — Michael Parks (Drake Caggiula, Mark MacMillan) 5:06. MacMillan is playing back to cover for a pinching Stecher and he makes a great hold at the point, sending the puck down low. Caggiula picks it off the wall and centers to Parks, who makes a poised play to move the puck around Rumpel and score.

UND 1, Wisconsin 1 — Jedd Soleway (Joseph LaBate, Kevin Schulze) 11:41 (pp). Tough sequence for UND, right after Simpson gets injured on a boarding that doesn’t get called, UW comes down and scores. Schmaltz misses a poke check and Soleway puts one off the post and in for his first-career goal.

Second period

UND 2, Wisconsin 1 — Rocco Grimaldi 7:45. McCabe sends a pass up the middle, but Grimaldi picks it off in the neutral zone and uses his great speed to get a chance. He flips a backhand from between the hashes past Rumpel’s blocker to give UND the lead.

Third period

UND 2, Wisconsin 2 — Tyler Barnes (Nic Kerdiles, Mark Zengerle) 9:32. A puck takes an awkward hop in UND’s defensive zone — Kerdiles fails to pick it up and two UND players take the wrong path to it not knowing where it was. Barnes picks it up, skates a couple of strides and rips a wrist shot past Gothberg on the glove side.

UND 3, Wisconsin 2 — Mark MacMillan (Brendan O’Donnell, Michael Parks) 18:16. O’Donnell has the puck at the right point on a rush and blasts one toward the net where there is traffic. The puck hits MacMillan and gets behind Rumpel for the go-ahead goal.

UND 4, Wisconsin 2 — Rocco Grimaldi (Paul LaDue, Mark MacMillan) 19:01 (en). Grimaldi gets to the halfwall and flips a blind backhand down the ice. It happens to be on net and it goes in.

UND 5, Wisconsin 2 — Rocco Grimaldi. Grimaldi picks up a loose puck in the zone and skates it coast to coast to finish off the hat trick and the game.

Not even considering the hat trick (with 2 EN)… That was the best Rocco has played in his two years with the Sioux… Good work boys!

17 of us here in Denver at Jackson’s Sports Bar in downtown. Can’t wait to watch tomorrow’s game!

What an amazing, Sioux-per duper stroke of luck Colgate came out flat and laid an egg!! Ferris could be the most over-rated team in the NCAA tourney (check their schedule/results), and just MIGHT be one of the Sioux’s easiest opponents all year. A little bit of luck, and they just might win this thing (although the ECAC teams are pretty formidable)…..

Underestimating any team in this tournament will get you bounced with a quickness. If ND doesn’t play with more focus and organization than they did against the Sconies, we’ll all be talking about the one that got away AGAIN.

So awesome. My wife and I were on a wine tour in California and found a sports bar in downtown Napa. The owner switched a basketball game to the hockey game for us. I think it’s safe to say we “caused a scene” after the win. Lay over flight tomorrow is between 6 and 9 at MSP. Go Sioux!

We caused a “scene” when my wife and I were in San Fran in 2010 when the Sioux put a beat down on the Goophs in the first round of the WCHA tourney. We were the only people watching hockey since the boring hoops tourney was going on……people thought we were crazy.
