Gameday Final: UND 2, FSU 1, 2OT

TONIGHT’S VIEWING: ESPNU, ESPN3. Lineup notes: No changes for UND or Ferris State. Full lines and live chat below.

First period

No scoring.

Second period

Ferris State 1, UND 0 — Cory Kane 7:31. Kane skates into the zone and snaps a wrist shot from the top of the circle unscreened that beats Gothberg five-hole. Probably one that Gothberg will want back.

Ferris State 1, UND 1 — Stephane Pattyn (Paul LaDue, Nick Mattson) 10:40 (pp). UND has a brief :13 five-on-three power play. Right after it ends, Mattson sets up LaDue for a one-timer. Pattyn deflects that shot past Motte. It is Motte’s first goal allowed in 50 shots in the weekend.

Third period

No scoring.

No scoring.

Second overtime

UND 2, Ferris State 1 —  Connor Gaarder (Paul LaDue, Nick Mattson) 1:28. LaDue launches a shot from the right point through a Rodwell screen. Motte makes the save, but Gaarder picks up the rebound and sends UND to Philly with a five-hole shot.

Very good play (and replay by ESPN) for Gaarder! Opened his blade to get Motte to open 5-hole and kick wide, then snuck it in between the wickets! Go Sioux!

  2. Sparky

Brad, will you ask your peers at the GFH to please stop calling UND “The Green and White?” It sounds like the GFH is reporting on some Jr. High hockey team when this Herald-initiated name is used. What’s next…..The Big Green and White Machine? The Really Green and White? The Green and Really White? The Mostly Green and White….when we are the visiting team? Or, The Green and Mostly White…..when we are the home team? Lol..can we just stick with UND for now?

I have to agree with Sparky. It sounds amateurish and lame, especially coming from professional journalists. Nobody at UND has sanctioned the name, to my knowledge, and to capitalize it gives it a degree of legitimacy it does not deserve. The only thing worse than a bad nickname, is a bad pseudo-nickname.

I’m with Skippy on this one also Brad. I comes off as some nickname the Herald wants to use simply because there isn’t another option. Personally I find it a little offensive given our situation. This nickname thing is still a war Brad….It’s SIOUX or nothing.

BTW…’re still the bestest college hockey writer in the Country.

With the win, Hakstol improves to 14-4 in NCAA regionals in his tenure. Yeah, that’s almost 80% (.778) against the nation’s best teams.

That deserves a call out, and a WOW.

Brad, I keep getting this feeling that the “big” schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc., look at UND as kind of pesky little bugger who keeps trying to mess around in their big-guy playground, and sometimes beats them. This seemed more so with the coverage of our win over Wisconsin as “dirty” and just a “bounce of the puck” – which it was, but makes it sound like we didn’t “deserve” the win. Any truth to that, or am I just projecting my own insecurity on the Sioux?? 😉

Congrats to UND. While Sioux fans would probably love nothing more than a chance to play Minnesota in the Frozen Four, this Husky fan is hoping its SCSU instead. Dang, though, we still need to get by the Gophers. Would love to see two NCHC and no B1G teams at the Frozen Four. But, at least we got one team in so far.

Good luck tonight…Dows pipe-ringer to win last night was awesome. While I’d much rather we get to beat the Gophers in Philly…..any time someone beats those bastards it’s a good thing.

I agree. I was cheering for Robert Morris yesterday and will be cheering for St Cloud today!

It’s going to be tough for the Huskies though…playing 2 games in a span of 22 hours.

Boy howdy!! BC sure emphatically announced their intentions with the beating they put on Denver though….

  6. Viking1

    “Fire Hak”!!

    “Our goalies suck”!!

“This team just doesnt have the will to win”!!

    LMAO…… 🙂

Tambellini called, he wants to come back. Good chance his season will be over before UND’s.

  8. Huh!

Kudos to all.. The team, the coaches and the loyal! This proves all along that the chemistry to win in what might seem to be the most unlikely of situations exists with this team! Therefore, there can be no GOOD excuses for laying an egg like we saw at the NCHC tournament! The march is on and let not the determination we saw this weekend go without appropriate acknowledgement!

  9. Dan

I agree with the comments that discourage the use of the Heralds use of the name Green & White. Please stop using that pseudo nickname.

Great coverage of a good weekend in Cincinnati!

    Go Sioux!

Time do grow up, move past your racism, and come to the realization that the name is gone. Or as you all like to say, “I’m not racist but..”.
