Owens Steps Down At CC

Scott Owens has stepped down at Colorado College after 15 years at the helm.

According to a press release from CC, Owens and athletic director Ken Ralph met after the season and “agreed” that “it was time for Owens to step down.”

Colorado College had a tough year going 7-24-6. The Tigers were knocked out of the NCHC tournament in the first round by UND in a tight, three-game series.

The Tigers have only made the tournament one time in the last six years. In 2011, they knocked off top-seeded Boston College in the first round.

Owens finishes with a record of 324-228-54.

Five names that come to mind as possible candidates are current assistant Eric Rud, former DU coach George Gwozdecky, former CC and current Minnesota assistant Mike Guentzel, Sioux Falls coach Cary Eades and Green Bay coach Derek Lalonde.

    Interesting news.

Rud is certainly a candidate and likely early front-runner favorite, having played for CC and having previously been an assistant at SCSU, where he was highly respected, and a head coach at Green Bay in USHL. Some thought he might be the heir apparent when he became Owen’s assistant. A very strong candidate indeed, Rud is relatively young and would be a fresh face to lead the program

Guentzel is intriguing. If he shows serious interest, then that’d be a sure sign that The Don is staying on for a longer term at U of M. He’d be a terrific candidate as well.

Everyone knows Gwodz can coach, and he’s well known in the recruiting hot beds of the NCHC schools. The big question, though, is if CC wants to go with a younger and more vibrant coach at the helm, which would catapult either Rud or Guentzel to the top.

Classy dude. He’ll be missed, even by SIOUX fans.

I’ll also miss the Jheri curl and porn star stache. Solid.

I’ve always had a ton of respect for Owens and the high quality teams he’s put together.

Any thoughts on him not attending the team banquet dinner at all? Seems like very odd timing to resign (effective immediately) only hours before it. Why not wait until tomorrow?

I am certain he will be at the team banquet. Just because he resigned/was asked to leave, I don’t think this will have any bearing on his attendance at the hockey banquet. Scott has a very strong group of supporters in the Springs, the players love the guy, and I’m sure he wants to be at the banquet with his team. Scott is a great guy and has a very dry sense of humor, I can almost picture that meeting with the AD….lol. He will be fine and CC will likely jump back into the picture soon enough.

If I’m making the decision at CC I go with Eades. The guy has won everywhere he’s been. He deserves a chance!

I would love to see Coach Eades get the opportunity. That said, I’m a bit partial to FIGHTING SIOUX alums/family members. The open position is certainly a great opportunity for all the potential candidates!

Owens was good. Hopefully he will get back behind the bench soon. Seeing the Gwoz take the spot would be nice. How long can we really go without a good dasher dance?
