Poolman named first-team all-USHL

East Grand Forks defenseman Tucker Poolman, who will come to UND next season, was named first-team all-USHL on Thursday. The other first-teamer was USHL MVP Brandon Montour, a UMass recruit.

Poolman finished third in scoring among USHL defensemen with 41 points in 58 games. He scored 15 goals, which led all USHL blue liners.

The extra year of juniors appears to have been a big benefit to Poolman and should ease his transition to college hockey, similar to the way it did for Paul LaDue this season.

Poolman will likely jump into the lineup right away next season and could be an impact player. UND needs to replace one defenseman with the loss of Dillon Simpson to graduation.

Blue liners, along with goaltending, should be the strength of the team next season with seven experienced defensemen (eight if we count Andrew Panzarella) working with Brad Berry to continue their development.

  1. I’m more interested in seeing how Poolman’s game changes in college. He did somethings in the USHL that I severely doubt Hak or Berry would ever allow at the DI level, sure, but will Poolman continue to be a scoring threat (in terms of goals for defensemen) in the NCAA?

I’m not so sure. His production also seemed to slow down significantly as the season progressed so…

Poolman is a good D, no doubt. He played in all situations for Omaha and was their Captain this year. I think he’ll challenge all the D for ice time right away though.
